Jusco, a Japanese store, is located in the heart of downtown Qingdao. Within the vast complex you may find a well stocked supermarket (although smaller than Carrefour) which can serve you very well. Fresh fruit, vegetable, fish, excellent meat and dry goods are found alongside the other usual supermarket products, giving you another large store to stock your kitchen. There is a very popular bakery next to the supermarket. The rest of the two floors of shops comprise of many individual boutiques, predominately ladies clothing, but there are small great boutiques for those younger, tea shop, games arcade, and many restaurants on the second floor. Plus, a Star Bucks on the first floor.
Carrefour is probably the most frequented supermarket amongst foreigners. It is large and shopping is spread over two floors; the second floor sells food stuff, drink, cosmetics and cleaning products; whilst the third floor provides clothing, household wares, electrical goods, toys and sports items. The range of food is wide, serving the local consumer and those wanting some imported items, such as Italian sauces, pasta, cereals, preserves, beers and wines. You can select your fruit, vegetables, fresh fish, seafood etc. Plus find most cuts of fresh meat. The dairy section is well stocked, with yogurts, cheeses and butter. No doubt you will find most of what you need here.
Sunshine Department Store is at the top end of the shopping scale. Centrally located and convenient you can find the famous international brands providing cosmetics, jewelry, watches, shoes, clothing and gifts. It's expensive but offers you the opportunity to buy international brand names. It is light and spacious with some restaurants and even small cinema rooms, too.
This indoor local market covers four floors and gives you hours of happy shopping! This is where you go for the imitations, such as watches, bags, clothing, accessories, shoes, suitcases, pearls, jade, Chinese gifts (chopsticks and fans) silk items, and so much more. Polish your bargaining skills and expect to negotiate a fair price. Packed within are hundreds of individual stalls, so hunt around, you never know what you can find! Good fun.
Book City is a very large bookstore located diagonally across the street from the Crowne Plaza hotel downtown. Unfortunately, they don't sell many English books but they do have a huge variety of books on Chinese learning for foreigners. So if you are thinking about either brushing up on your Chinese, or simply want to learn a few words to get around, visit this bookstore and you won't be disappointed. Also has a very nice, cheap and clean internet facility where you can check your email or browse the web.
Located next to Book City on Hong Kong Rd, MYKAL is a huge mall selling a great variety of almost everything you can think of. It is seven stories high with a supermarket in the basement and a movie theatre on the top floor. Unfortunately, they only have one English movie playing at any given time. The mall also has a pretty decent gym as well! You can find various international brands of pretty much everything here and the prices, though a little more expensive than home, aren't too high to burn a hole in your pocket. A welcome addition to the shopping scene in Qingdao.
